According to a recent survey, Americans searching for an inexpensive retirement should not disregard abroad choices.

International Living has created the 2021 Annual Global Retirement Index to help people identify cheap and sometimes unusual places to retire.

International Living examined 25 nations based on ten metrics: housing, benefits, visas/residence, fitting in/entertainment, climate, healthcare governance, opportunity, and cost of living.

According to International Living, each of the nations rated in the 2021 Annual Global Retirement Index is available to US individuals amid the continuing Covid-19 epidemic.

Here are International Living's top ten greatest destinations to retire in 2021, listed in ascending order:

10. Vietnam

Vietnam is a serene, welcoming country famed for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas, and vibrant cities. It was once a French colonial territory, then a split war-torn republic. The country received a near-perfect 99 for cost of living and an 84 for healthcare, but only a 60 for benefits, visas/residence, and climate.

Vietnam

Malta 9.

This Mediterranean country's various fortifications, temples, and subterranean labyrinth of halls and burial chambers going back to 4,000 B.C. will appeal to history aficionados. Malta got a 90 in fitting in/entertainment but a less-than-impressive 63 in climate, 66 in housing, and 68 in cost of living, owing to its relaxed way of life combined with European elegance.

Malta

France 8.

France is a dynamic Western European country that will entice even the most discerning gourmet, the most discerning fashionista, or the most jaded traveller in quest of fresh and thrilling sensory experiences. However, great living in Europe is not cheap: while France received an 84 for healthcare, the country received a 69 for cost of living and a 65 for housing.

France

Malaysia 7.

Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country with a lot to offer: white sand beaches, colourful rain forests, skyscraper-studded metropolitan hubs, and a complex blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European cultural influences. The country received a 91 for cost of living and a 90 for healthcare, but only a 64 for benefits and a 62 for climate.

Malaysia

Ecuador 6.

Ecuador's environmentally diversified geography, which straddles the equator on South America's west coast, is a treasure trove of natural beauty, including the Amazon jungle, Andean mountains, and wildlife-rich Galápagos Islands. The country received near-perfect scores of 95 for benefits and 93 for cost of living, but only 70 for governance, 74 for opportunity, and 75 for development.

Ecuador

Portugal 5.

Portugal, which borders Spain on Europe's Iberian Peninsula, was once a great naval empire. Today, it is a popular destination for expats due to its Old World charm. Portugal received a 95 in healthcare, an 84 in cost of living, and an 87 in housing and fitting in/entertainment. The country's governmental red tape, on the other hand, earned it a 64 in visas/residence.

Portugal

4. Columbia

This lovely gateway nation to the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest is South America's geographical jewel—diverse, dramatic, and spectacular to see. It is also a short drive between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Columbia received a near-perfect 96 for healthcare and an 89 for cost of living, but only a 71 for opportunities.

Colombia

Mexico 3.

Mexico is home to almost one million happy-retired Americans and a half-million Canadians, making it one of the most popular expat destinations in the world.
